Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is pleased to present the first in this year’s series of Supporters Club Talks. Supporters Club Talk #5 features artist, teacher and researcher Mick Wilson on the topic ‘Exhibition / non-Exhibition: The question of artist-led culture, public-ness and publicity’.
The exhibition is a central institution of contemporary art practice. It is perhaps the most widely used instrument for bringing publics together around artworks; for making artistic labour visible; and for defining what is the current horizon of artistic practice. In artist-led initiatives and artistic self-organisation, the exhibition is also a key practice, but it is accompanied by other institutions such as the studio, production workshops, publications and other kinds of activity. Artist-led initiatives can also generate a whole range of ancillary effects that go beyond the production of artworks and of exhibitions. There is currently a great deal of debate and research underway on these different dimensions of artist self-organisation.
Mick Wilson, currently researcher at the Valand Academy, Gotenburg Sweden, is well known to artists and the arts community in Ireland for his impressive leadership in the area of art and education. He was a founder member of MAVIS (IADT), and later the founder Dean of the Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media, GradCAM, (Ireland). His extensive research areas range from food to morality, philosophy and curating and public-ness. He has published widely on art, education, the role of the cultural institution, on civil society, urbanism and curation. He is renowned for his brimming mind and brilliantly provocative, insightful public presentations.
