Bourdieu
Morgan Quaintance, 2026
U.K., approx. 50 mins
Screen 3, Irish Film Institute
As the artist writes, ‘At the centre of this film is the idea that time spent in unfamiliar cities or countries can reveal something about the constructed nature of your own, and the arbitrariness of social systems in general. For Pierre Bourdieu it was Algiers in the 1950s/60s; for me it was Chicago in the 1980s. Often this is framed as a negative condition, but here it’s positive. My film places viewers in the compelling centre of images, symbols and social impressions that produced this experience of estrangement and insight for me.’
Using the practical sociology of Pierre Bourdieu as an interpretative frame, Quaintance’s exhibition will present an interrelated body of new moving image, photographic and textbased work. I’ll Always Remember… extends from a new moving image work, titled Bourdieu, in which the sociologist’s analytical tools are used as prompts guiding a biographical retelling of the artist’s childhood experience living between London and Chicago.
Morgan Quaintance’s work has been shown at MOMA, New York; Konsthall C, Stockholm; Courtisane Film Festival, Ghent; Images Festival, Toronto; International Film Festival Rotterdam. He is the recipient of a number of awards for his work; most recently the 2025 Film London Jarman Award.
