Artist Isabel English presents a new body of work, referencing two main sources, The Deep North by Fanny Howe (1990) and A Manual of Artistic Anatomy by C.L. Sparkes (1888). This new presentation of the artist’s work is in development with curator Mark O’Gorman and will continue towards an exhibition in 2028. As part of the presentation, there will be a performance in collaboration with artist Holly Pickering Saturday 7 November at 4pm.
“G lay her head down on her folded arms, on the table, and squinted until the shapes around the window vanished. Like a miniature screen, the window shimmered images: figures, faces, places. They were scattered and broken, though, by a hand on her neck. A soft warm squeeze and she leaned into Darlene’s palm and rested there. They both looked at the mother as if she was an image cast by electricity, paint, or light on a wall beside them.”
– Fanny Howe, The Deep North (New York: Nightboat Books 2020), p. 158.
