This month's pick, Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy, selected by exhibiting artist Katarzyna Perlak, follows the character Connie Ramos. After being unjustly committed to a mental institution, Connie is contacted by an envoy from the year 2137, who shows her a utopian future of sexual and racial equality and environmental harmony. But she also bears witness to another potential outcome: a dystopian society of grotesque exploitation. One will become our world. And Connie herself may strike the decisive blow...
The book club will start with a brief exhibition tour, led by TBG+S' Sadbh O'Brien, of Katarzyna Perlak's Better a bare foot than none, which draws on themes of folk traditions, queer narratives and diasporic identity. Eric Patrick Byrne and Dónal Talbot of Queer Book Club will then lead the book club with some refreshments in Studio 1.
This event is a collaboration between Queer Book Club and TBG+S Art + Literature Book Club.
Queer Book Club Dublin is a community-led book club run by Dónal Talbot and Eric Patrick Byrne. The club was established in March 2023 and operates through its Instagram profile @queer.books.dublin. The group meets monthly to discuss queer literature, focusing on a different novel every month, either written by a queer writer or dealing with queer themes. It is open to everyone and anyone that wants to engage with queer literature, regardless of their own identity. Using queer-friendly spaces in Dublin as a base, the club usually meets at Love Tempo, but have also hosted events at Street 66, All My Friends and the International Literature Festival.
