Natasha Bourke is a Cork-based artist of Irish and Dutch descent. She uses performance, digital & analogue lens-based media, light, sculpture, tropes and sound as languages in her practice. With an extensive background in dance, aerial and performance, Bourke’s current movement practice includes swimming, yoga, contemporary, butoh and vertical dance, which often influence her visual work. She has been involved in a wide range of solo and collaborative performance projects, residencies, collectives and events (all which have served to enrich her practice), and has also exhibited film, sculpture and installation in both gallery and site-specific contexts nationwide. The concerns of Bourke’s work often stem from autobiographical, phenomenological & archival sources whilst contemplating more universal themes of self and society such as identity, time, obsolescence, perception, pathos, dystopia and the sublime. Existential themes of longing, loss and isolation tend to be rendered with a sense of the absurd and irony. From a theoretical point of view mythological, philosophical and anthropological sources are drawn from to help put the work into a wider context. Coneface, Bourke’s main performance alter ego is an anonymised pathos figure regularly used by the artist to explore the above themes. The persona continues to evolve, having been performed in various milieux for live and filmic events in Cork, Kilkenny and Dublin since its realisation in 2014.
