Masterclass: Painting a Symplegma

18 September 2025, 2pm

Join artist Samir Mahmood to explore Indo-Persian miniature painting techniques in this artist Master Class.

Please note as there are very limited places, confirmation of attendance will be requested closer to the time to hold your place.

‘Symplegma’ can refer to anything that is braided, entwined, or entangled. In Indo-Persian miniature paintings, these appear as composite drawings popular during the Mughal and Rajput periods. Work with the artist to experience and try key Indo-Persian miniature techniques. Learn how to layer transparent washes and fine hatching (pardakht-style detailing), with gentle burnishing to create the traditional miniature “sheen” on a smooth support (traditionally wasli). You will then create a composite or entwined drawing to form interlaced shapes, inspired by “Symplegma”. These techniques will be connected to contemporary themes (gardens, bodies, transformation) that often inspire miniature-informed artwork.

Samir Mahmood is this year’s commissioned artist for the Flags series, annually commissioned by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios on the occasion of Culture Night. Flags: Guardians over the city are a series of flags created by Samir Mahmood to fly along Wellington Quay, there will be an accompanying drop in workshop, late gallery opening and studio tours for Culture Night 2025 at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios.
