Screening: Mila Turajlić, Non-Aligned: Scenes from the Labudović Reels

On the occasion of her solo exhibition, The Last Balkan Cowboy, Dragana Jurišić invites filmmaker and artist-researcher Mila Turajlić to Dublin for a special documentary screening.

Join us for this special screening followed by a short conversation between the filmmaker Mila Turajlić and Dragana Jurišić. Non-Aligned: Scenes from the Labudović Reel (2022, 100mins) is a feature documentary built from the extraordinary newsreel archive of Yugoslav cameraman Stevan Labudović, tracing the Non-Aligned Movement’s cinematic solidarity with liberation struggles in Algeria and across the decolonising world.

Mila Turajlić is a filmmaker and artist-researcher born in Belgrade. Her films (Cinema Komunisto, The Other Side of Everything, Non-Aligned, Cine-Guerrillas) explore how intimate memory and archival fragments collide with erased political histories. The Other Side of Everything won Best Documentary at IDFA. Her long-term project Non-Aligned Newsreels reactivates Yugoslavia’s cinematic solidarity with Third World liberation movements through films, installations and workshops, shown at art venues and international biennials (Sharjah, Berlin, Yogja). Her live documentary performance has recently become a production of the Théâtre National de Bretagne. She is currently completing editing of a documentary film about Elaine Mokhtefi.

Dragana Jurišić’s works predominantly through the medium of photography, film and installation. Born in former Yugoslavia, she has been living and working in Dublin since 1999. Her current exhibition at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, The Last Balkan Cowboy, is an outcome of a long-term project that follows the footsteps of cult Yugoslavian film director, Hari Džekson renowned for his interpretation of Wild West genre archetypes. This exhibition comprises of photographs made across Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia in between researching and filming a feature-length documentary on Džekson directed by Jurišić. Other recent work has been included in Kutxa Fundazioa Tabakalera, San Sebastián (2025); IMMA, Dublin (2023); Crawford Art Gallery, Cork (2022); Zurich Portrait Prize, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (2021); Slavonski Brod (2021); Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin (2020).
