Recent decades have witnessed a new interest in the activity of curating, so that the figure and practice of the curator has acquired a prominent place within art discourse and art education. In contrast, the practice of the programmer is less widely theorised, and the positions, strategies and histories associated with programming often occupy a relatively peripheral role within film and media education. This session provides an opportunity to consider some of the questions facing curators and programmers working today in cinema and gallery contexts, as well as a chance to explore some of the specific curatorial propositions developed for PLASTIK. Panellists will be asked to reflect upon their own approaches and to consider questions such as: What role can curated moving image programmes play in the ongoing development and critique of moving image cultures, practices and economies? How do curators and programmers envisage their own responsibilities, strategies, and research processes? The session will include short presentations by several curators directly involved in the PLASTIK programme, along with invited contributions from programmers and curators working elsewhere.
In association with Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire (IADT)
This February, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is delighted to co-host PLASTIK, the inaugural international festival of artists’ moving image. PLASTIK emerges from collaboration between Critical Forum Dublin (a meeting group for artists involved in the moving image), LUX, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and the Irish Film Institute. It is made possible through the generous support of the Arts Council.
This is a free but ticketed event. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Stepping in to the TBG+S Gallery is always a transformative experience. Leaving behind the cobbled streets, touristy pubs and buskers of Temple Bar, we enter a place of integrity, contemplation and experimentation.
