Landmark as Witness is a series of flags commissioned by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, hoisted along Wellington Quay for Culture Night. This year, artist Jialin Long has conceived the flag designs using the idea of the landmark as a witness, inspired by the Ha'penny Bridge in Dublin.
‘Water symbolises the flow of people traveling from one place to another, while the bridge represents the connection between different cultures, fostering friendship and understanding. In my studio in Temple Bar, I am continually fascinated by the diverse crowd passing each day. My exploration with a camera always leads me back to the Ha'penny Bridge, which stands as a silent observer of the unique stories and backgrounds of every individual who crosses it. This landmark, witnessing countless journeys, embodies the vibrant and diverse landscape of Dublin.’
–Jialin Long
The flags can be seen flying over the Liffey on Wellington Quay for the month of September. There will be an accompanying drop-in workshop at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios on Culture Night.
Jialin Long’s practice focuses on contemporary cultural issues, using new methods of presentation to explore socio-political and feminist themes. Through photography, artificial intelligence, and CGI technologies, she actively seeks to break existing visual formats and challenge the aesthetics and concepts of her intended messages.
