Further Information

For her first major solo exhibition, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios presents a new body of work by Hannah Fitz. Fitz’s sculptures bring to mind familiar furnishings, made using paper, plaster, and resin layered on to steel frames and painted in distinctive monochromes. Dubious sculptures of chairs and tables seem to creep away from themselves, TV screens emit a frozen light, jeans and jumpers fulfil their expected shapes before collapsing back into a pile of clothes.

The opening line of an awkward joke - Knock Knock - frames an uncomfortable expectation. Fitz’s sculptures rely heavily on our gaze to finish them; to recognise them as objects in the world. They have a self-conscious agency, carrying out constrained gestural poses, playing up to our expectations and failing. Their reductive material qualities are causing them to fall back in on themselves like a stumbled punch line.

Each piece is condensed into Fitz’s distinctively illustrative language, using an overworked imperfectness; everyday objects become caught up in the stillness of sculpture. Furniture and clothes, the surrounding paraphernalia used to define and fix our bodies in space, stands away from us, potent and condensed. Empty clothes struggle to hide their non-existent heads. Chairs become impossible to sit in, and a flower in a vase tips its head and points its toe. Here, it is the make-up, as opposed to the bone structure that draws out the face.

Knock Knock emerges from Fitz’s year-long residency at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios in 2015/16, when she was awarded the Recent Graduate Studio, and her current research at the Staedelschule Frankfurt.
