Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is delighted to announce Jialin Long as the recipient of the Recent Graduate Residency 2023.
We very much look forward to working with Jialin, supporting her practice and welcoming her to the creative community of artists at TBG+S.
Jialin Long’s practice focuses on issues in contemporary culture, using new methods of presentation to explore socio-political and feminist issues. Formulating alternative statements and positions, Long challenges stereotypes and rethinks issues facing marginalised communities. Using photography and, more recently, artificial intelligence she actively seeks ways to support and enhance the desired aesthetics and concepts of her intended message.
Jialin Long is a Chinese lens-based artist, and photographer. She graduated with a first-class honours degree in photography from IADT (2020), winning awards with her project Red Illuminates, which has been exhibited in and published with photography institutions throughout Ireland, Europe, the UK, and Canada. Long’s latest work What Do you think of Me?, commissioned by The Creative Ireland/DCC Arts Office/Photo Museum Ireland, centres around the theme of diversity, and challenges stereotypes of the Chinese community in Dublin.
Jialin describes the impact of the award on her practice and her hopes for the residency going forward:
'Being awarded the graduate studio at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is an incredible opportunity for my practice. As an emerging artist, having access to a dedicated studio space will be invaluable for me to develop my work and expand my artistic practice. I’m currently engaged in a project that takes its roots from previous work. Working from home while managing a family's needs can be challenging and make it difficult to accomplish objectives. I believe that being part of a supportive artistic community is essential for an emerging artist, and I am excited to join the vibrant community at TBG+S. I’m hoping to use this residency as an opportunity to maximise productivity and make advances. Being awarded the graduate studio at TBG+S will provide me with the space, resources, and support necessary to take my practice to the next level.'
