Technicians

Nature of Work: This is technical work in support of the
exhibition programme. Work involves assisting in the preparation
and maintenance of art work facilities and displays, the installation
of exhibitions, the preparation of the gallery for exhibitions by
installing display and lighting systems; packing and unpacking artworks
sent and received by the gallery.
Illustrative examples of work
- Works with the curator or gallery director
in the preplanning of exhibition installation;
- assists in the receipt and unpacking
of art work utilising proper handling techniques;
- undertakes the preparation of the gallery
space - painting, plastering, electrical set-up;
- installation and/or hanging of artworks,
ensuring that levels of quality are met at all times;
- assists in the dismantling of exhibitions,
and preparation of art for shipping;
- maintains gallery maintenance materials
and facilities, arranging for supplies when required.
Experience requirements
- Experience in the practical operations
of exhibition installation;
- knowledge of techniques, materials, and
methods utilised in the preparation and installation of art exhibitions;
- project management skills;
- ability to perform and complete tasks
within aggressive time limits to gallery level of quality;
- ability to work within a team and take
direction, whilst at the same time able to work alone with minimal
supervision;
- knowledge of correct methods in handling
and moving art objects;
- ability to get information needed to
do the job;
- decision making and problem solving
- communicate with other team members;
- carry out ideas, programs, or systems;
- Inspect equipment, structures, or materials;
- estimate sizes, quantities, time, cost,
or materials needed;
- up to date job-related knowledge;
- monitor events, materials, and surroundings;
- Organise, plan, and prioritise work
- provide information or drawings about
devices, equipment, or structures;
- think creatively;
- occasionally co-ordinate the work and
activities of others;
- provide advice and consultation to others;
- redirects and replaces gallery lights
as needed.
Physical Work Conditions
- Often work indoors, but may on rare
occasions work outdoors.
Work Performance
- Must be sure that all details of the
job are done and their work is exact. Errors could damage artworks.
Delays to project schedules are unacceptable.
Hours/Travel
- Flexible working hours are required.
This position is part time and requires weekends.
Terms
Gallery Technicians are retained at a daily rate which is related
directly to the period of set up of each exhibition. We are currently
seeking people who are qualified to both lead exhibition installations
from preplanning to the exhibition being ready, on-time, on-schedule,
and within budget. We are also looking for qualified people to work
