Program
Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (TBG&S) is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art venues. Centrally located in the cultural quarter of Temple Bar, TBG&S is a publicly funded, not-for-profit organisation, which hosts a high profile programme of Irish and international art. The gallery programme includes both established and emerging artists working in a wide range of media. In 2008 the gallery programme included artists, Colin Darke (NI), Niamh O’Malley (IRE), John Gerrard and Joy Gerrard (IRE), Michael Coleman (IRE), Sonia Shiel (IRE), Hanneline Visnes (IRE), Candice Breitz (SA), John Duncan (IRE), Richard Galpin (UK), Ken Gonzales-Day (US), Idris Khan (UK), Lidwien van de Ven (NE), a collaboration between Operating Theatre and cinematographer Christopher Doyle and a group exhibition by over one hundred and forty Irish and international artists. Temple Bar Gallery & Studios was established by artists in 1983 in response to the increasing demands for affordable studio spaces in Dublin city centre, a move which proved to be crucial in consolidating Temple Bar’s cultural status. In the mid-1990's a new gallery and studio complex was custom-designed for the company by leading Irish architects McCullough/Mulvin. Today the building that houses TBG&S integrates a gallery with on-street access, an impressive atrium space and 30 artists’ studios. The use of these studios reflects the broad-ranging developments in contemporary art practice with artists working in photography, video, sound, sculpture/installation, print and painting all currently occupying studios here. The ethos of the organisation is to provide support for Irish and International artists to make new work, take new directions and set new challenges in their practice. TBG&S fosters a welcoming, friendly environment for artists and offers a broad range of experience to studio artists through engagement with the extended studios programme: Outreach, Critical Contexts Talks, Open Studios, Peer Critique and other public platforms and projects. Temple Bar Gallery and Studios TBG&S wishes to inform artists that several studio spaces will become available for use over 2009/2010. We are now inviting applications for Project and Membership studio occupancies from Irish and International artists. Project Studios for Emerging Artists and International Artists Please note, the application process for Project Studio is very competitive and if you were awarded one of these studios in recent years, it is unlikely the panel will repeat this award. Three Year Membership StudiosAn award of a Membership Studio is made to an artist who has firmly established their career and trajectory. In addition, the award confers the responsibility of company membership status on the successful artist in accordance with the Articles of Association. A Membership Studio gives the artist occupant or member full voting rights on Temple Bar Gallery and Studios policy, which may lead to responsibility at Board level. Applications for Membership Studios are evaluated on the basis of merit and need.Artists are eligible to enter separate applications for both Project and Membership Studios, which are covered by the same fee of €20. Selection Procedure:All applications will be placed before a selection panel comprising a sub-committee of the Board and an independent external adjudicator. The panel relies on the material you submit in your application to make the decision. It is important therefore to ensure that your application follows closely the guidelines set out in the application form. The selection panel will give consideration to the proposal, quality of work, expressed and perceived need and CV/experience.Studios are of varying dimensions ranging from 21m/sq to 55m/sq and have 24 hours access. Fees for studios are considerably subsidised and range from €179 to €250 per month inclusive of heating and bills. Artists can avail of wireless internet access in their studios. These are not residential studios. FeeA processing fee of €20 should accompany applications. Please note that the same €20 fee covers the two applications if an artist is applying to Project and Membership Studios. Temple Bar Gallery and Studios Temple Bar Gallery & Studios is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art venues dedicated to the promotion, presentation and mediation of contemporary visual art and to the provision of affordable studio space to professional artists. Centrally located in Temple Bar, Temple Bar Gallery & Studios is a publicly-funded arts organisation that provides 28 studios for Iocal and international artists and hosts a high profile programme of Irish and international art. The gallery programme includes both established and emerging artists working in a wide range of media. The Temple Bar Gallery & Studios’ building integrates a gallery with on-street access, an impressive atrium space and 30 artists’ studios. The use of these studios reflects the broad-ranging developments in contemporary practice with artists working in photography, video, sound, sculpture, print and painting all currently occupying studio here. The ethos of TBG&S is to provide support for Irish and International artists to undertake new work, take new directions and set fresh challenges in their practice. Following on from the success of the pilot initiative in 2008, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios will again allocate one of these studios for specific, dedicated use by a visual art curator(s) and/or art critic/writer(s) to support the research, planning and development of new creative projects over 2009/2010. Applications are invited from curators and art critic/writer(s) who are actively engaged with contemporary visual arts discourse and practice in Ireland. The Curator/Critic’s Studio is set-up to support independent curators and art critics in extending discourse, critique and enquiry into the contemporary visual arts in Ireland. While welcoming projects that focus on an individual’s curatorial or critical practice, collaborative or group applications are also welcomed. Similarly, proposals made on the basis of public projects, collaborative projects or education and community activity will also be considered. Applications Selection The studio size is 4.6m length x 4.3m width. The rent for the studios is considerably subsidised at €156 p/month currently, bills included. This is not a residential studio. International Studio Programme Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (TBG&S) is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art venues. Centrally located in Dublin’s cultural quarter, TBG&S is a publicly-funded, not-for-profit arts organisation. The organisation was set-up by artists in 1983 and is dedicated to the promotion, presentation and mediation of contemporary visual art and to the provision of affordable studio space to artists. The building, which is distinctive for its clean modernist lines, integrates a spacious gallery at ground floor, an impressive atrium space and thirty artists’ studios over three floors. Of the thirty artists’ studios at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, one is reserved for international artists while the others are allocated to Dublin-based artists on a competitive basis. The International Studio Programme at TBG&S offers an opportunity for artists based outside of Ireland to live and work in Dublin for a period of three months. The programme aims to encourage international contacts for artists and to provide artists with opportunities for researching and developing their creative practice in a Dublin context. The International Studio Programme is open to visual artists who work in all disciplines. The international studio is the largest in size (71m sq) and one of the best in the building. It is not a residential studio. Liaison staff at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios provides assistance in locating suitable accommodation in Dublin city. The cost of the studio is €250 per month. Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is also interested in developing its International Artist Exchange Programme with similar arts organisations. TBG&S has established a successful artistic exchange partnership with HIAP - Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Programme. Facilities No studio equipment is provided. However, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios can provide access to organisations in Dublin (darkrooms, video editing and print making facilities) that can provide the use of equipment for visiting artists.
