Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (TBG&S) is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art venues. Centrally located in the cultural quarter of Temple Bar, TBG&S is a publicly funded, not-for-profit organisation, which hosts a high profile programme of Irish and international art.  The gallery programme includes both established and emerging artists working in a wide range of media.  In 2008 the gallery programme included artists, Colin Darke (NI), Niamh O’Malley (IRE), John Gerrard and Joy Gerrard (IRE), Michael Coleman (IRE), Sonia Shiel (IRE), Hanneline Visnes (IRE), Candice Breitz (SA), John Duncan (IRE), Richard Galpin (UK), Ken Gonzales-Day (US), Idris Khan (UK), Lidwien van de Ven (NE), a collaboration between Operating Theatre and cinematographer Christopher Doyle and a group exhibition by over one hundred and forty Irish and international artists.

Temple Bar Gallery & Studios was established by artists in 1983 in response to the increasing demands for affordable studio spaces in Dublin city centre, a move which proved to be crucial in consolidating Temple Bar’s cultural status.  In the mid-1990's a new gallery and studio complex was custom-designed for the company by leading Irish architects McCullough/Mulvin.  Today the building that houses TBG&S integrates a gallery with on-street access, an impressive atrium space and 30 artists’ studios.  The use of these studios reflects the broad-ranging developments in contemporary art practice with artists working in photography, video, sound, sculpture/installation, print and painting all currently occupying studios here. The ethos of the organisation is to provide support for Irish and International artists to make new work, take new directions and set new challenges in their practice. TBG&S fosters a welcoming, friendly environment for artists and offers a broad range of experience to studio artists through engagement with the extended studios programme:  Outreach, Critical Contexts Talks, Open Studios, Peer Critique and other public platforms and projects.

Open Call to Artists Applications to Studios at TBG&S 2010-2011

Background
Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (TBG&S) is one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art centres. Centrally located in Dublin’s cultural quarter, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is a publicly-funded, not-for-profit arts space set-up by artists in 1983. A gallery and artists studio complex, it is dedicated to the presentation, promotion and mediation of contemporary art and to the provision of affordable studio space to artists. The use of the studios reflects the broad-ranging developments in contemporary art practice with artists working in sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video, film, performance, live art, sound, collaborative practice, research-led practice, photography and print all currently occupying studios here.

The building that houses TBG&S was custom-designed for the company by leading Irish architects McCullough/Mulvin in the mid-1990’s and integrates a spacious gallery at ground floor, an impressive atrium space and thirty artists’ studios over three floors. Of the thirty artists’ studios at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, one is reserved for use by international artists while the other available studios are allocated to local artists on a competitive basis. Artists participate on the International Studio Programme by invitation or by applying to one of our residency exchange exchange partners, currently HIAP-Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Programme and The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt am Main

The ethos of the studios programme is to provide support for Irish and International artists to make new work, take new directions and set new challenges in their practice. TBG&S fosters a welcoming, friendly environment for artists and offers a broad range of experience to studio artists through engagement with the extended studios programme including Exhibition Talks and Critical Contexts Programme, Open Studios, Peer Critiques and other public platforms and projects.

Studios are of varying dimensions ranging from 21m/sq to 55m/sq and are have 24 hours access. Fees for studios are considerably subsidised and rents range from €179 to €273 per month inclusive of heat, electricity etc. Artists can avail of wireless internet access in their studios for an additional monthly cost. The studios are not residential studios.

Information
We wish to inform artists that several studio spaces will become available for use over 2010-2011. We are currently inviting applications for Project and Membership Studios and also to the TBG&S Visual Art Curator/Art Writer’s Studio for 2011. There is separate information and details about the Curator/Art Writer’s Studio and how to apply.

Project Studios will be available for short-term use and for varied periods, ranging from one month to one year. Awards for Project Studios are usually made to younger, emerging artists who demonstrate clear artistic talent and the potential to progress in their career. International artists of merit and experience should also apply to this category for short-term Project Studios.

Applications for Project Studios will be assessed on the basis of a specific proposal. While welcoming projects that focus on individual practice, applications made on the basis of public projects, collaborative projects or education and community activity will also be considered. Proposals should include an outlined plan for the use of the studio over a set period of time.

Please note the application process for Project Studio is very competitive and if you were awarded a Project Studio at TBG&S in very recent years, it is unlikely the panel will repeat this award. In this case, you should consider applying for a Three Year Membership Studio.
Three Year Membership Studios are awarded to artists who are in the process of establishing their career and trajectory or to established artists. This Award confers the responsibility of membership status on the successful artist in accordance with the company’s Articles of Association. The Membership Studio gives the artist occupant full voting rights on Temple Bar Gallery and Studios policy, which may lead to responsibility at Board level.

Selection Procedure:
All applications will be placed before a selection panel comprising a sub-committee of the Board and an independent external adjudicator. The panel relies on the material you submit in your application to make the decision. It is important therefore to ensure that your application follows closely the guidelines set out in the application form. The selection panel will give consideration to the proposal, quality of work, expressed and perceived need and CV/experience.

Fee
A processing fee of €20 should accompany applications. Please note that the same €20 fee covers the two applications if an artist is applying to Project and Membership Studios. For international artists, there is the facility to pay the €20 processing fee by credit card. Please contact the office at TBG&S to do so (see below for details)

Deadline Date
Wednesday 28th April at 5pm is the closing date for receipt of applications
Notification Date
Approximately two months from the application date

Information on the TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-Residence Award
Temple Bar Gallery and Studios (TBG&S) is delighted to announce a new partnership for international arts exchange in 2010 with The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt. This partnership is a new Award open to emerging and ‘emerged’ visual artists in Ireland and provides a funded opportunity for one artist to participate on Frankfurt City’s Artist-in-Residence Programme. From 1st October – 31st December 2010, Frankfurt’s Artist-in-Residence Programme will host one artist from Ireland in the newly constructed ‘Kulturbunker’ studios. Reciprocally, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios will host a German-based artist in Dublin from October-December 2010. Artists currently living and working in Ireland are invited to apply to TBG&S for the pilot ‘TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-residence Award’ by 12pm on Friday 23rd April 2010.

The TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-residence Award will provide one artist from Ireland with spacious live/work accommodation, a monthly stipend of €700, a museum card and bicycle in Frankfurt. Artists must be available to take-up the residency from 1st October – 31st December 2010 and these dates are not inter-changeable.

About Artist-in-Residence Programme – Frankfurt am Main

The Cultural Department of the City of Frankfurt owns 45 artists’ ateliers, which are rented to local artists at reasonable rates. Three of the ateliers are used as guest ateliers for exchange programmes. Usally, the City’s host 8-10 foreign artists per year. The spacious ateliers and monthly grants for the foreign artists are financed by City of Frankfurt. It is seen as an important cultural transfer and part of the City´s art and artist promotion strategy. As it is based on reciprocity, Frankfurt artists benefit in the same way as foreign artists. The aim is mainly to develop functional international networks between artists, art institutions and cultural departments.

Artist in Residence Exhibition – Frankfurt am Main

In addition, artists participating on Frankfurt’s Artist-in-Residence Programme will have work selected for the annual Artist in Residence Exhibition in November, which will launch in conjunction with several cultural events across the city. The Artist in Residence Exhibition exhibits work by all the foreign artists, who lived and worked in Frankfurt during their residency in the past year. The opening is conducted by the Deputy Mayor in charge of Culture of the City of Frankfurt and the main curator of the exhibition, Prof. Peter Weiermair. Each year a booklet about the artists and exhibition is produced.

The opening of the Artist in Residence Exhibition coincides with Open Doors, a Cultural Department event run in collaboration with two big artist organisations and atelier-houses. These openings are usually followed by a big party and the Friday Kitchen (artists are cooking for artists, inspired by the cooking class of the Frankfurt Städel Art School).

Acknowledgements

The TBG&S and Frankfurt City Artist-in-Residence Award is supported by the Goethe-Institut Irland, The Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt and the private sponsorship of Therry Rudin and Patricia Hurl, artists at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios who have offered a city centre apartment for the three month’s of the Dublin residency.

Eligible Artists

The Award is intended for both emerging visual artists and also, artists who have emerged and have forged a path in art practice but could use the residency to further their career. The Award is for artists who are not yet fully established. Frankfurt’s Artist-in-residence Programme gives precedence to younger, qualified and promising artists who want to use the opportunity for probing and experimenting with their art practice in a new, foreign context. The residency allows foreign artists a certain distance from thier work and a new, fresh persepctive for viewing their art so that they can take chances to develop new ideas and work out projects.

Applications

TBG&S and Frankfurt’s Culture Department welcomes applications from artists with wide range of backgrounds and diverse practices. There are no limitations nor preferences on the media used. The assessment will be made on the artistic merits.

Applications will be placed before a selection panel comprising the arts sub-committee of the Board of Temple Bar Gallery and Studios for initial shortlisting. A shortlist of 3 applications will then be sent to the Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt for final adjudication and only one artist from Ireland will be selected for the Award

The panel relies on the material you submit in your application to make the decision. It is important therefore to ensure that your application follows closely the guidelines set out in the application form.

Application Fee
A processing fee of €20 should accompany applications. The processing fee can be paid by cheque or cash to Temple Bar Gallery and Studios. For artists applying from outside Dublin, there is the facility to pay the €20 processing fee by credit card. Please contact the office at TBG&S to do so (see below for details)
