OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH by Garrett Phelan

Thursday 29th March, 2013: Dublin’s Cultural Quarter will feature a new landmark from May 1st when Temple Bar Gallery +Studio (TBG+S) unveil the work of artist Garrett Phelan on the roof top of their city centre building. The structure commissioned by TBG+S to celebrate 30 years as a hub for artistic activity in Ireland will stand 3 meters tall and feature the inscription ‘OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH’.

TBG+S are a gallery and artists’ studios complex located in the heart of Dublin’s Temple Bar. One of the first DIY artist initiatives in Ireland it was started by a group of artists and administrators in 1983 and was instrumental in establishing Temple Bar’s reputation as a place for cultural activities, contributing its regeneration as Dublin’s Cultural Quarter in the early 1990’s. The commissioned piece is part of their 30 year celebrations and the project is being funded through a FUNDIT campaign a move that organisers hopes will encourage people to get involved and take collective ownership of the work .

Claire Power Director of TBG+S said “Garrett Phelan is one Ireland’s most distinctive artists whose work is recognised nationally and Internationally, and we hope that this piece of art will become something iconic, something that draws people into the heart of Dublin’s Cultural quarter, repeating the process of art engaging with the city and the people of the city that the studios and gallery began back in 1983.

“ The FundIt campaign is a means of generating the money needed for the projects but we also hope that those who donate will feel that they are an integral part of the project itself.”
Garrett Phelan has exhibited extensively in Ireland and internationally , most recently hosting a major solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art .He is renowned for his distinctive art practise which directly engages with site specific projects.

As part of the Fund It campaign Garrett Phelan has produced a number of exclusive limited edition art works for those who donate, including a limited edition Maquette of the structure, providing people with the opportunity to acquire original art works and play a critical role in realizing the art work.

OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH

Fundit campaign

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios/Garrett Phelan

For the last 30 years Temple Bar Gallery + Studios (TBG+S) has been a hub for artistic activity in Dublin City, with hundreds of artists using studio facilities, hundreds more exhibiting in the gallery and thousands upon thousands of visitors experiencing inspirational visual art though our diverse programme of exhibitions and events.

To mark our 30th anniversary, TBG+S are commissioning artist Garrett Phelan to make an iconic art work for Dublin. Launching on May 1st, ‘OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH’ will stand tall on the roof of TBG+S, looking over Temple Bar Square. This art work will act as a beacon for the TBG+S building and share an uplifting message as a new landmark for the city and its inhabitants.

Garrett Phelan has exhibited extensively in Ireland and internationally, most recently a major solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and a commission for the 11th Lyon Biennale. His distinctive art practice directly engages with immersive and ambitious site-specific projects such as FM radio broadcasts, sculptural installations, photography and animation. The multiple meanings in the sentence ‘OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH’ reclaim language from religious ideologies and bureaucratic systems into a proposal for a new union – one which we can all be a part of. This gives us the space to contemplate and re-imagine new belief systems as we endeavor to emerge from economic and social instability.

The fund –it campaign for this project is not only intended as a way to fund the work, but as an integral part of the project itself. For the duration of its display on the roof of TBG+S, the funders will take collective ownership of the work for themselves, for their loved ones and for all the citizens of the city.

As an exciting development of the project, Garrett Phelan has produced a number of exclusive limited edition art works as rewards for funding the work. On offer are a specially designed limited edition hoodie, a designed limited edition shoulder patch and a limited edition Maquette of the ‘OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH’ sculpture. In supporting this fund-it campaign you will acquire original art works by this important artist and also play a critical role in realizing what is destined to become an iconic art work for Dublin.

To make this exciting project happen, and in exchange for great rewards, we need you to pledge your support now!

With thanks Claire, Rayne, Anne.

As part of the research around the anniversary, TBG+S is compiling a list of all artists who have worked in the studios since 1983. Over 1,000 artists are estimated to have worked at TBG+S over a generation and records are incomplete. If you have information on this, from either occupying a studio at TBG+S or knowing an artist who did, particularly between the years 1983-2000, it would be hugely helpful if you could get in touch.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios report a significant increase in visitor numbers since 2010

~ Plans underway for 2013 30th Anniversary ~

- 27% increase in visitors between 2011 and 2012

- Over 70 school and university tours, talks and events since January 2012

- 3,000 visitors to the building on Culture Night alone (50% increase on 2011)

In the run up to its 30th year, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios has experienced a 66% increase in visitor numbers in the past two years. This increase in attendance is a result of a shift in focus for the exhibition programme, with a series of 13 newly commissioned exhibitions and events such as the Dublin Art Book Fair proving to be popular with visitors.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios has renewed its emphasis on public engagement through its new education programme, inviting school, university and community groups for in-depth tours of exhibitions and artists’ studios, as well as offering weekly guided tours and a variety of talks and events which are free and accessible to all.

Claire Power, Head of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios said, “It is really encouraging to know that more people than ever before are visiting us to experience contemporary art in Temple Bar. The attitude that ‘anything is possible’ is what prompted a group of artists to set up Temple Bar Gallery + Studios 30 years ago and create such a valuable and lasting legacy. TBG+S's relationship with the Arts Council of Ireland has been crucial in its story and evolution beginning in the 1980’s with a first grant of £300 and rising to approx. £30,000 by 1987. We are looking forward to the anniversary year and to the next 30 years, and hope to keep increasing our visitors and connecting more and more people to our many activities at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios”.

Exhibitions in 2012:

2012 in the Gallery programme saw seven exhibitions featuring Irish and international artists. In January 2012: Bit Symphony Liam O’Callaghan was an audio-visual installation consisting of an assemblage of turntables, reconfigured so as to autonomously perform a complex musical composition of looping records. In February/March 2012: Lights, Camera, Action! was an exhibition curated by Mary Cremin, featuring Anja Kirschner & David Panos, Laurence Kavanagh and Allan Hughes. It investigated the cinematic process, bringing together four artists whose work draws inspiration from the visual language of cinema. Next in April/May 2012: Entrance Entrance, Curated by Isobel Harbison, featured the work of Alan Butler, Gabriele Beveridge, Juliette Bonneviot, Mick Peter, Peles Empire. The exhibition focused on the life of the modern image. The artists were selected for their use images as an entrance point to their diverse ideas. The Summer exhibition in June/July was called Won Nil, by Irish artist Nevan Lahart. This solo exhibition of newly commissioned work focused on Ireland's political present and past soccer glories. Lahart is well known for his irreverent social commentaries. His work is often highly politically charged and full of humour. In August/September the exhibition Making Familiar was curated by Robert Armstrong and James Merrigan featuring Mark Swords , Paul Doran, Mary Ramsden, Mark Joyce, Diana Copperwhite , Vicky Wright, Daniel Pitin, Eithne Jordan, Andreas Golder, Damien Flood, Peter Burns, Kevin Mooney. The curators placed the spotlight on the work of two contemporary painters each week. Over the course of six weeks, twelve artists were paired together, both to exhibit and to discuss their work in the setting of the gallery. Most recently in October November: Root, by Bea McMahon was curated by Rayne Booth. This was the second of TBG+S newly commissioned exhibitions. The centrepiece of this exhibition is a moving image work and a mesmeric, kinetic sculpture. Upcoming in December 2012/January 2013 is an exhibition entitled : To start with, Let’s Remove the Colour, Curated by Paul McAree featuring Marc Bijl, Jo Mitchell, Simon Bedwell, Sonia Shiel, Ryan McClelland, Mark Pearson. These six artists use every day cultural references as a starting point in their work. The exhibition considers the nature of object making and an art work’s existence as object

2013: 30th anniversary celebrations

To mark the 30th anniversary of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios in 2013, plans are now afoot for a programme of new artistic commissions, a major public art work, a cross border collaboration and publication which will be produced specially to mark the milestone. TBG+S will release full details of its artistic programme in January 2013 in a themed Generation year.

Founded by a radical group of artists in 1983 in a disused factory building in Dublin’s Temple bar, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios was instrumental in establishing the area’s reputation as a cultural hub and contributing to its regeneration as Dublin’s Cultural Quarter. Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is one of the first artist-led initiatives in Ireland.

In the past 30 years, the studios at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios have been home to over 1,000 artists, and the work of hundreds more have been exhibited in the gallery on Temple Bar Square.
