The Workers Café | Open call for workshop proposals

18 July 2013

10 October – 2 November, 2013 | Call for workshop proposals.

Deadline | Friday August 30th.

The Workers Café is a project that will transform the Gallery at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios into a social space for discussion, skill sharing and debate from October 10th until November 2nd 2013.

This experiment aims to provide the infrastructure for artists to earn money in ways which relate to their practices. The budget of the exhibition has been set aside to pay fees to artists who deliver workshops, talks and performances.

Inquiries into Labour, in both historical and contemporary contexts will be collectively addressed. The Workers Café will be an event-based exhibition that will deal with these ideas, but with a particular emphasis on real-world issues facing artists in Ireland today through an investigation of time as a unit of economy, acts of community, generosity and goodwill within a micro-economy.

The environment will be at once an artwork, a café, information centre and an events space. The café will become a hub in Temple Bar in which members of the public alongside artists can come to drink coffee, discuss, socialise, read and talk, as well as taking part in a series of daily curated events.

A daily programme of participatory events run by artists will focus: workshops, discussions, exchange, and skill-sharing. These are open to the public on a first-come-first-served basis, and cost just €5 each. Events will take place at 3pm daily or as announced. Details of daily workshops will be available online and in the gallery space during the exhibition. A series of artists information sessions, discussions and clinics, programmed in collaboration with Visual Artists Ireland, will also be available.

A temporary kitchen, called ‘The Hare’ after the SS Hare CWS - a relief ship which brought food to starving strikers during the 1913 lockout, will be set up to provide sustenance to local artists, workers and visitors. The Hare is led by artist Fiona Hallinan and chef Katie Sanderson, with alternating guest chefs, including artists involved in Workers Café.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is now accepting proposals from artists to deliver workshops, talks and performances. Each proposed artist-delivered event should last approximately one hour, and take place predominantly in the gallery/café space. The fee for delivering one of the workshops will be €150.

If your workshop requires any special or extra materials, please specify these costs in your proposal.
