14 December - 02 February 2019

Hypocaust is a site-specific installation created as part of the Children’s Section of Dublin Art Book Fair 2018. Curated by Dr. Ellen Rowley, DABF18 included free children’s events, an inspiring selection of children’s books and this specially commissioned interactive artwork installation.

The installation is the result of an extensive collaborative engagement between artists Andreas Kindler von Knobloch and Tanad Williams, architect Donal Hickey, and the children of the 6th class Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire, Parnell Square. The word ‘hypocaust’ derives from Ancient Greek and is a reference to the earliest systems used to create heat. It also resonates with the artists’ on-going research into ovens and brick-making. Taking the form of a raised platform built of brick, the installation creates a cosy space in the Atrium of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios for children to enjoy. It incorporates objects including stone tablets, bricks, aprons and notebooks made by the children over an eight-week programme, led by Dr. Ellen Rowley.

Hypocaust and the Children’s Section in Dublin Art Book Fair 2018 were made possible by funding from the Arts Council Ireland’s Engaging with Architecture
scheme.
