Exhibitions & Public Events 2009 September - October 2009 Seven Folds in time Jaki Irvine Preview: Friday 31 July, 6-8pm ‘Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is delighted to present Seven Folds in Time by Jaki Irvine, a major new multi-screen video installation commissioned by and made specifically for Temple Bar Gallery. Jaki Irvine’s work in film and video, whether in single-screen format or in more complex multi-screen installations, weaves together enticing, though ultimately elusive narratives in which image and musical score variously overlap, coalesce and diverge. These languid explorations of human interaction with the natural world, the built environment, and with other humans are suffused with a melancholic lyricism, sometimes leavened by a dreamlike humour. Subjectivities split and fragment as the boundaries that separate self from other become fluid or permeable. In Seven Folds In Time, the artist foregrounds the relationship between music and image, which has long been a significant aspect of her practice. Working with the musicians Marja Gaynor and Joe O'Farrell, Irvine has developed a work in which the editing process itself comes to the fore as an organising principal. Moving between overt musicality and the edges where a sound begins or ends, the artist focuses on the rigours and pleasures of playing an instrument, bringing together the private space of practice with the possibilities of performance it anticipates.
August - September 2009 Compendium Colin Crotty (IRL) Dan Hays (GB) Anne Kelly (IRL) Dennis McNulty (IRL) Padraic E.Moore (IRL) The Otolith Group (GB) Peter Saville (GB) Preview: Friday 31 July, 6-8pm ‘We shall never reach a moment when the phrase ‘This is a story about….’ ceases to fascinate or enchant’ (Richard Kearney) Temple Bar Gallery and Studios presents Compendium, a group show of new and recent work by artists based in Ireland and the UK. The title, meaning ‘a collection, something compiled, a body of knowledge’, is intentionally nostalgic, evoking memories of book or box collections, usually of stories, games or comic book fictions gathered together to inform or entertain. Compendium, the exhibition, is a compilation of artworks, each one selected for its strong storyline, narrative references or anecdotal content. The place of narrative in contemporary visual art practice is explored by artists using a diverse range of media (painting, drawing, text, film sculpture, image and sound). Together, the works form a repository of fictions, recollections and recreations. Remembrance and imagination are central to how the narratives are related and configured, but the transformation occurs in how (and to whom) the tales are told.
June - July 2009 It Goes On... Alan Butler, Brendan Flaherty, Eilis McDonald, James Merrigan, Ivan Twohig, Soft Blonde Moustache. Preview: Tuesday 2 June 2009 It Goes On is an exhibition featuring artists who have graduated from formal education in the past five years. Each of the artists in this exhibition have continued their distinctive artistic practices at an intense pace since leaving college, exhibiting regularly in artist run spaces, self initiated exhibitions, and curated shows. Each of the artists in this exhibition are emerging; still developing their artistic ideas, striving to find a platform and negotiate the pitfalls and obstacles that this difficult career choice brings.
April - May 2009 The Present Eija-Liisa Ahtila Preview: Friday 17th April 2009 ‘Give yourself a present, forgive yourself’ Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is delighted to present its third exhibition of 2009, The Present a five piece film installation by renowned Finnish artist and filmmaker Eija –Liisa Ahtila. Ahtila has an extensive reputation both at home and abroad for her compelling film work, typically presented on split screens and multiple panels, exploring the full range of human emotions, relationships and psychoses. Ahtila’s films tell stories, vivid narratives are recounted that evolve from an in-depth process of research and observation and from intense collaborations with actors, cinematographers, producers and technical crew.
February - April 2009 Bonfires Preview: Thursday 26 February 2009, 6pm - 8pm Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is pleased to present Bonfires, an exhibition by Belfast-based photographer John Duncan. This exhibition presents a large body of work by Duncan, produced over three years, documenting the long-standing tradition of bonfire building by Protestant communities in Belfast. Duncan’s photographs capture bonfires waiting to be set alight, built in preparation for the annual 11th July celebrations commemorating the defeat of James Stuart at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Amongst the Protestant community in Belfast, bonfires serve as a powerful provocation; a way in which Protestant identity can be asserted and a sense of solidarity and continuity re-affirmed. January - February 2009 Volume V - I Think I Remember Preview: Friday 16 January 2009, 6pm - 8pm I think I remember is the fifth in a series of exhibitions at Temple Bar Gallery & Studios entitled Volume. Over the past five years, Volume has aimed to explore sound as a medium and subject in contemporary art, and has showcased innovative sound work by artists and curators based in and outside of Ireland. I think I remember is curated by Dennis McNulty, and features seven artists who often work with sound, but who might not necessarily consider themselves sound-artists. For these artists, sound is just one material, but one that is particularly important as a conduit for exploring ideas. 2008 November - December 2008 Winter Salon Preview and Party: Tuesday November 18th 2008, 6-10pm Temple Bar Gallery and Studios plays a vital and enduring role in the cultural life of the city. This year, TBG&S celebrates its 25th birthday. To mark this special occasion, a group exhibition on a grand scale will open on Tuesday November 18th. Winter Salon will feature new work by over one hundred and twenty artists both established and emerging, most of whom have enjoyed a connection with this organisation over the years. September - November 2008 Here lies in Film... Preview: Thursday 25 September 2008, 6-8pm Temple Bar Gallery and Studios and Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival are pleased to present the premiere of Here Lies in film... a digital film installation by Operating Theatre (Olwen Fouere and Roger Doyle) in collaboration with master cinematographer Christopher Doyle and edited by Simon Hudson. The film is constructed using footage from the original live installation of Here Lies which was created by Operating Theatre with theatre director Selina Cartmell in 2005. August - September 2008 I can/Can I? Preview: Friday 8 Aug 2008 6-8pm “There is in effect something that humans are and have to be…It is the simple fact of ones’ existence as possibility or potentiality” - Giorgio Agamben 1993 Temple Bar Gallery presents I can / can I? on painting and potentiality, a three person show featuring recent and new work by Michael Coleman, Sonia Shiel (both from Ireland) and Hanneline Visnes (born in Norway, now resident in Scotland). The title sums up the intent of the exhibition: to locate painting in the realm of possibility and to consider the necessity of interrogation and experiment if painting is to continue to evolve towards a place of limitless potential. April - May 2008 Under Erasure Temple Bar Gallery and Studios presents Under Erasure, a group show where the interplay between what is concealed and revealed makes evident the power of erasure as subject and process in contemporary art. The title owes something to Jaques Derrida the French philosopher who used the strategy of deletion (already developed by Heidigger ) or ‘Sous Rature’ as a means to convey the inadequacy of language to accurately define ideas. John Gerrard & Joy Gerrard Temple Bar Gallery & Studios is pleased to present a two person exhibition by John Gerrard and Joy Gerrard. Both John and Joy have been connected with Temple Bar Gallery and Studios in the past: Joy presented ‘The Crowd Transfixed’, work in progress in Studio 6 (then a project space) in November 2003 while John was awarded a one year project studio at TBG&S in 2006. Both artists maintain separate art practices. While their careers are independent, as siblings they have always taken a strong and supportive interest in each others work. For the curator who has observed their respective trajectories it is clear that what connects this work is its engagement with important global issues. The validation for this dual presentation is the artists mutual concern with the environmental and the political and with the boundaries and limits of human control. Artistically, this translates into strong impactful imagery, resonant with the atmosphere of an impending force or event. February - April 2008 a situation, a situation, and a story by Niamh O'Malley Temple Bar Gallery and Studios is pleased to present a situation, a situation, and a story, a solo exhibition by Irish artist Niamh O’Malley. At Temple Bar Gallery, O’Malley presents three new works which expand her enquiry into the fabricated nature of the viewing experience. Her works often consist of highly seductive and richly coloured surfaces which collapse on close viewing into simple constructions; a slide or a video, projected onto the surface of a painting. O’Malley is interested in the distance from a source image to a spectacle and the deliberate manufacture and inherent disappointment of illusions. January - February 2008 The Capital Paintings by Colin Darke Temple Bar Gallery and Studios’ first exhibition of the new year is a solo show by Derry based artist Colin Darke. The Capital Paintings, best described as a painting installation, comprises 480 individual pieces each painted on a standard A4 size canvas uniformly hung and covering the entire wall space of Temple Bar Gallery. Collectively, these pieces form a single significant body of work, the result of a methodical and painstaking process carried out by the artist over a period of four years. Colin Darke is well known as a conceptual artist both in and outside Ireland. This is his first solo exhibition in the Republic of Ireland. 2007 November - December 2007 The BiG Store This Christmas, Temple Bar Gallery & Studios presents The BiG Store, a department store specialising in contemporary art. With prices ranging from €5 to €5,000, this is a perfect opportunity for budding and established art collectors alike to access the best new contemporary art by a wide variety of emerging and established artists. Like the classic Marx Brothers movie from which it takes its name, The BiG Store is an engrossingly eccentric and anarchic vision of a modern department store. This exhibition features specially commissioned work from over 80 of the most interesting and challenging artists from Ireland and abroad. A commercial sales floor has been temporarily installed in Temple Bar Gallery, transforming the space into a commercial gallery/shop; a disguise which aims to confront the objectives and functions of a commercial art space, as well as inviting the viewer/shopper to embark on a provocative expedition into themes of economy, art production and distribution, power, consumerism, fetishes and excess.
