The Ontology of the Artefact

The Ontology of the Artefact is a digital publication exploring the conditions of the artefact within colonial museology through to contemporary visual culture. It is a platform for discourse surrounding the artefact and its displacement, creation, destruction, and reimagining. This publication interweaves texts from various fields of expertise, discussing questions such as:

  • “What is an artefact?”
  • “What sociological, political, cultural, historical factors turn an object into an artefact?”
  • “What artefacts may represent contemporary imperial constructs of culture?”
  • “What artefacts may represent absences in cultural representation?”
  • “Can an artefact be digital?”
  • “Can an artefact be contemporary?”

We invite you to join us for the launch of The Ontology of the Artefact digital publication, with a talk by contributors to the publication.

Public Events by NCAD’s MA Art in the Contemporary World
In October and November 2018, students from NCAD’s MA Art in the Contemporary World programme took part in a public programming module with TBG+S and RHA Gallery. As part of this, students are devising a public programme around RHA's exhibition Futures, and TBG+S' exhibition Inscriptions of an Immense Theatre by Ailbhe Ní Bhriain.
