From topsoil to bedrock, what makes up the great ‘underneath’ of the garden?

Artist Tanad Williams will work with children and their parents/carers to create a miniature landscape inside a large-scale garden planter. Participants will learn about different types of earth and soil, what we walk on, what we dig through and even layers we’ll never reach. From sand and clay to city streets and roots, how does the delicately balanced life of plants depend on the layered garden and how do all these layers of material help bring about lush green leaves. All children and carers will plant a soil bed with bee friendly plants and Irish Flora high above the streets within the existing roof garden at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios.

A printed instruction manual will be given to all participants so they can rebuild their own structure to different scales, fill with different soils and plant with different plants to suit their own gardens, outdoor spaces, balconies or backyards.

Serious About Play is a series of family workshops at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, as part of Dublin City Council’s Cruinniú na nÓg - a day of youthful creativity in Dublin City.
