Talks + Events
Thursday, 15 November – Saturday, 17 November 2018
Opening Wednesday, 14 November, 6-8pm
Stephen Dunne and Alison Pilkington have both held Membership Studios in TBG+S for the past three years. As painters, their studios are an essential component of their practice as a place to work, study, plan, and experiment. Each of the two artist’s practices are expansive and distinctive, yet they share concerns such as balancing figuration and abstraction with humour and the uncanny. Their paintings convey stories and metaphors, not only through the imagery they choose, but the way these images are created and manipulated through the use of paint. Using familiar and recurring motifs, new connections to historic, contemporary and otherworldly narratives are identified and unfolded.
To mark the end of the artists’ term in the studios, and on the Board of TBG+S, join Stephen Dunne, Alison Pilkington and Interim Programme Curator Michael Hill, for an informal discussion about each artist’s work, and how they have used their studios at TBG+S to develop their practice. The studios will remain accessible to visitors during gallery opening hours between 15 – 17 November.
Stephen Dunne will hold three concurrent solo exhibitions in 2019 at Triskel Arts Centre, Cork; RHA Ashford Gallery, Dublin; and Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon.
Alison Pilkington’s recent exhibitions include How We Roam, The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon and the RHA Ashford Gallery, Dublin. She will show work as part of Selected Artists Contemporary British Painting, Marylebone Crypt Gallery, London, in November.
