For the third year running, TBG+S presents Summer Lightning, a summer party night featuring the best of dublin's live music scene.
This year’s line-up includes some of the best live acts in Dublin where you can expect to hear synth-wave trio Dark Room Notes, minimalist art rockers Thread Pulls, bassy beat lovers Bloody Ends, the melodic and rhythmic Ana Gog, Ed Devane's Withering Zithering project, the punk-funk stylings of Lamont/Bailey/Wall, improvised songsmithery of Clang Sayne, and Skinny Wolves DJs, with visuals by James Kirwan. The €10 cover charge is offset by a BYOB policy to bring the summer festival feeling inside one of Dublin’s best loved hubs of arts and culture- TBG+S!
All proceeds raised go towards supporting the dynamic programme of artistic activities that take place at TBG+S including exhibitions, artist talks, film screenings, performances and pop-up events. It’s shaping up to be the highlight of the Dublin’s Summer gigs so come join the party and show your support!
BAND BIOGS
THREAD PULLS
Thread Pulls are part rock band, stripped back to a core of drums and bass. Skewed grooves anchor their hypnotic proto-disco sound - kick-drum centred and sub-bass heavy. Roughly cut vocal layers and eastern trumpet-echoes coupling solar-synth-drones bring to mind early elements of future sounds. Having acquired a considerable reputation for their raw, energetic live shows and limited EP releases, they released their debut album New Thoughts to critical acclaim at home and abroad on Irish independent label OSAKA recordings at the end of 2010, followed by extensive touring in Ireland, UK, Europe and Scandinavia.
With echoes of Sheffield’s most prolific sound processers Cabaret Voltaire and the complex polyrhythms and repetitive dance styles of New York’s ESG, New Thoughts gestated and grew from extensive live shows often in galleries and warehouses in Dublin.
DARK ROOM NOTES
This Dublin-based three-piece electro/synthpop outfit Dark Room Notes’ founding members, Ronan Gaughan, Ruairi Ferrie and former drummer Ruairi Cavanagh originally hail from Galway. Later members Arran Murphy is from Wicklow, and Darragh Shanahan, who was the band's drummer for four years, comes from Dublin. The band's music has been described as electro/synthpop with a slightly sombre overtone and introverted lyrical sensibility. According to Village they "seem to gather comparisons with the murkier side of electro pop, usually bands like New Order, Interpol or Joy Division. While the comparisons have some basis, DRN are far from gloomy, just a bit ... cool... But this cool does not translate into pretension, just humorous and knowledgeable asides to their favourite artists, photographers and filmmakers". The band's debut album We Love You Dark Matter was nominated for the Choice Music Prize.
BLOODY ENDS
Bloodyends have one foot in the murky world of analogue, the other jerks with digital. There is a body of music to be laid out. A short, sharp pointless existence. Horses, horses, more damned horses............. The bass has a pride of place amongst us, the only guitars that you will see here are of the bass sort, often two at once, this is where the sounds usually start. Nina plays bass, glamours recycled keyboards and skip paraphernalia. Gillian beats out beats with plenty of attitude. Paul cranks the lead bass to conjure up tunes, adds words and dubious dances. Mark sings, spins yarns and casts dark, beautiful shadows.
ANA GOG
A tight-knit group with a fluid playing style, Ana Gog have grown together through formative school and college years and emerge as one of Ireland's most unique bands. Led by multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter Michael Gallen, their distinctive sound is one forged over countless performances together where eclectic influences have been distilled into a captivating whole. Combining nuanced songwriting with ornate instrumentation, Ana Gog create evocative and melodic music built upon a complex palate of sounds.
WITHERING ZITHERING
Is the name given to Ed Devane's zither music project. Working in tandem with his more rhythmic work, this music has until quite recently remained unheard to all but its creator. Whereas most of the music released under the name Ed Devane is relatively noisy, rhythmic, and machine-like, Withering Zithering is lush, ambient and organic. Using a homemade zither and hands, metal bars and sticks to manipulate this source, Devane shows a side to his music only hinted at on his official releases. This music is predominantly made in the evenings, in the hour or two before bedtime.
LAMONT/BAILEY/WALL
This outfit have been a going concern since summer 2010 making their debut at Monster Truck Gallery's Xmas Xtravaganza and since playing a string of gigs in off-beat locations around Dublin. They are Ian Lamont (guitar, keyboards, singing), James Bailey (bass guitar), Patrick Wall (electronics, singing). LMB play electronic influenced pop music. Think Bizarre Love Triangle meets Paul Simon solo, all crisp, sweet and neurotic.
CLANG SAYNE
Clang Sayne is a platform for songwriter and improviser, Laura Hyland to collaborate with other artists through improvisation. It began in 2008 as a music group exploring the boundaries between song and improvisation, the main output of which to date has been the album, 'Winterlands', and ongoing public performances.
SKINNY WOLVES DJs
Skinny Wolves are Dublin based purveyors and lovers of independent record culture and all that surrounds it. They bury themselves in, amongst other things, releasing records and booking events for the bands they love and playing music from the records they love. Inspired by music from the Post-Punk, No/New-wave, Krautrock eras and everything it has inspired and influenced since, they have helped forge a new DIY underground in their hometown.
JAMES KIRWAN (VISUALS)
James Kirwan graduated from NCAD in 2005, he has exhibited his work all over town, literally. His witty approach never fails to either amuse or disturb. He likes to draw and paint on paper, wood, concrete, glass and any other flat surface. His clients include, ABSOLUT Vodka, Vodafone, and the list goes on but he’s not one to boast so lets keep this part brief. He is a regular feature at the Electric Picnic, Kings of Concrete and anywhere there is a bit o craic.
