  'Winterreise' Live Performance
Shaw Room, National Gallery of Ireland
Sunday 23rd January 2005 @ 3pm

- SOLD OUT -

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios in association with the Goethe-Institut Dublin and Opera North presents a unique performance of Franz Schubert's twenty-four part song cycle 'Winterreise' in a one-off ticket event in the Shaw Room of the National Gallery of Ireland at 3pm on Sunday 23rd January 2005.

Opera North is England's national opera company in the North. The company has established itself as one of the leading arts organisations in England and one of the most imaginative opera companies in Europe, with a reputation for bold,, imaginative productions of both familiar and less familiar repertoire. As well as its large-scale productions, the Company takes an innovative approach to making a broad range of music theatre and seeks out opportunities to collaborate with contemporary creative artists engaged in drama, film, the visual arts and literature wherever possible.

In 2003 Opera North and Leeds City Art Gallery jointly commissioned the internationally acclaimed artist Mariele Neudecker to create a visual counterpoint to 'Winterreise', Schubert's great song cycle of the German Lieder tradition. Neudecker's filmic response is a visual reflection of Wilhelm Müller's tale of unrequited love, despair and suicide. Schubert's settings of Müller's poems are poignantly sung in the accompanying soundtrack, the related texts floating over the visuals.

The Opera North 'live' production of 'Winterreise' will be presented alongside Mariele Neudecker's film at the National Gallery of Ireland on Sunday 23rd January. 'Winterreise' will be sung in German by Andrew Foster-Williams, bass-baritone with Christopher Gould on piano. The Opera North performance of 'Winterreise' represents the first ever operatic act by the Company in Ireland and should not be missed. Mariele Neudecker's 'Winterreise' will be exhibited at Temple Bar Galley and Studios from 12 January - 12 February 2005.
