The symposium Drawing Now? - Examining Issues in Contemporary Drawing Practice
at Dublin Institute of Technology on 25th November, 12.30pm-4.30pm, takes its title from the seminal 1976 Museum of Modern Art (New York) exhibition Drawing Now. Rather than being an authoritative overview like the MOMA show, the symposium seeks to address specific issues that are vital to contemporary drawing. It will investigate three main strands of practice, as reflected in The Square Root of Drawing exhibition currently on view at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios in collaboration with in DrawingLab at DIT have invited key practitioners Catherine de Zegher (freelance curator and former Executive Director and Chief Curator of The Drawing Center in New York) and Tim Knowles (UK-based artist) to consider three views of drawing: as primary practice, as one aspect of a varied practice and as a preparatory medium. Dr. Siún Hanrahan (artist, writer, and research coordinator for the School of Art Design and Printing at DIT) will chair the symposium.

Drawing Now? promises to be a lively forum and discussion that will make a significant contribution to the current and renewed interest in drawing within contemporary art practice.

Catherine de Zegher is the former Executive Director and Chief Curator of The Drawing Center in New York. Previous to this position, de Zegher was the co-founder and Director of the Kanaal Art Foundation in Kortrijk, Belgium. She is the curator of many acclaimed exhibitions internationally. Her most recent curatorial and editorial work includes Eva Hesse Drawing (2006); 3 x Abstraction: New Methods of Drawing by Hilma af Klint, Emma Kunz, and Agnes Martin (2005). Currently, she is writing a book on drawing in the twentieth century.

Tim Knowles creates drawings independent of his own hand, using elaborate apparatus or time consuming practices. Interested in the process of drawing Knowles invents experimental and playful procedures to introduce chance and unpredictability into his work. Recent shows include Knowles & Morland, Rokeby, London, UK and Art on Wheels, Rome, Italy.

DrawingLab at DIT
DrawingLab is a research forum established in the Faculty of Applied Arts at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Participants include: DIT staff and postgraduate students, international colleagues and practicing artists/designers.
